2022 Themed Quilt

String-Time In the Smokies

String piecing is a patchwork quilt-making technique that is accomplished by sewing multiple fabrics together to create a “strip set” that looks just like a portion of a quilt block. The strings or strips can be any color combination, from scrappy to graduated color families. The strips don't need to be uniform width and strip set can be cut apart to yield segments that replace two or more pieces of fabric. The quilt must be an interpretation of string quilts and be recognizable as a string quilt.

Prize categories are split into large and small quilts. Quilts will be accepted that meet the theme of the year’s criteria and are clearly recognizable as a string quilt when completed. A large quilt is a quilt with a perimeter of 250 inches or larger. A small quilt is a quilt with a perimeter of 249 inches or less. These categories are exempt from the Quilted by Another restriction.

Top prizes will be awarded for 'Best in Show' (Large and Small), 'Excellence in Hand Workmanship' (Large) and 'Excellence in Machine Workmanship' (Large). Prizes will be available for all categories (Large and Small) and will be awarded for 1st - 5th place.

  • Class 17/29/40 - BE COLORFUL 3-DAY WORKSHOP (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

Class 17/29/40 - BE COLORFUL 3-DAY WORKSHOP (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

    Instructor: Jacqueline de Jonge
Skill Level: Confident Beginner to Advanced
    LC: North 2A
    8:30 am 4:00 pm (18-hour class)

Jacqueline will be teaching five different patterns during this three-day workshop ranging from Level 4 patterns (Confident Beginner with knowledge of paper piecing) through Level 5 patterns (Intermediate quilters who know how to paper piece and are not afraid of curves) to Level 6 (Intermediate and Advanced quilters with a lot of sewing experience and knowledge of paper piecing.)

Students have to be fully prepared for a BeColourful class.

That means that they have to read the pattern at home. It makes so much more sense when they work in class to understand the instructions I show them. They also have to cut all the fabrics for the pattern of their choice and organize the fabrics into zip lock bags. And finally they must cut the paper piece templates and store them into the right zip lock bag with the right fabrics. It works so much nicer at home to get organized in your own space and you can spend time when it is convenient to work on the preparations and you don’t have to stress.

Jacqueline strongly advises all quilters who want to take the class to buy the Happiness 2.0 pattern which is a 38” x 38” wall hanging which contains all 13 techniques you will use in ALL of Jacqueline’s designs. This will give students confidence and they can find many tutorials on the BeColourful website. Play with some of your old fabric and become familiar with the BeColourful methods.

Check out Jacqueline’s website at BeColourful.com.
